The Amityville Horror: Based very loosely on the real DeFeo murders in 1974, The Amityville Horror starts with a faux news report telling of the greusome murders of the DeFeo family by their son Ronald, who claimed that the house told him to do it. After the murders, (and a great deal of cleaning!) the house where it all took place is put up for sale. Ryan Reynold's character and his family are in the market for a new home and find that this could be the dream house they have been searching for! Of course, this wouldn't be a horror movie if their dream home didn't turn into a bloody nightmare! While no where near the truth of what actually happened in that house back in the 1970's, the writer has definitely woven quite an entertaining tale! The original version and it's sequels left me rolling my eyes during an endless series of yawns, but this new look at Amityville kept my attention and actually had me on the edge of my sticky movie theater seat! A great haunted house story that was just waiting for good actors, a decent script, and all of the new thrills and jumps that special effects have to offer! |
Silent Hill: Sharon is a sweet little girl with some serious issues and sleep walking episodes. Her mother, Rose, wants to help her but is running out of ideas... except one. She thinks that if she tries to take her daughter to a town called Silent Hill, a town she only knows from her daughter's dreams, then maybe they can start down a road of recovery. It is very clear to Rose that this town is more than just a little odd, but she has no idea what dangers really lurk in this desolate town. After sitting though such films as Doom and House of the Dead, I must admit that I was hesitant to watch Silent Hill. However not taking two little hours out of my life to watch this movie would have been a huge mistake! By far the best video game turned feature film yet. So put down your joysticks and pick this movie up! |
I am Legend: In the not to distant future, a bio-chemical plauge has swept the country and wiped out what we consider civilization. Will Smith plays a scientist who is immune to this disease is attempting to find a cure. By day he can be found hunting deer in Times Square from a Shelby GT 500, or down at the video store chatting it up with the Mannequins! However, when the sun goes down and darkness cloaks New York the only safe place to be is curled up in a bath tub with a machine gun! This fabulous film has only one flaw in my eyes, and it isn't necessarily even their fault. It's just a sign of the times. But I am a bit saddened by the lack of actors with overwhelming amounts of make-up and props portaying the bad guys. This transition into a CGI world of monsters is not sitting quite right with me. It just isn't the same without the actors. I'm sure someday latex prosthetics and airbrushed skin wil be looked at as archaic... I'm just not ready yet. Computer generated monsters or not, this film will have you bolt up-right in your casket anxiously waiting for the next thrill! |
The Mist: The master of the macabre, Stephen King, has done it again! The mist follows a group of people at the local market stocking up on supplies after a bad storm. While the storm may have been bad, the mist that settles into the town afterward is a true nightmare. This mist seems spooky from the start, but what is hiding in it will chill you to the bone! Now trapped in the supermarket, afraid to face what is in the mist, the towns folk will either have to work together to survive, or kill each other trying. True King fans will point out the changes that the filmmakers made to the original story. Don't let them get to you. Both the short story and the film are incredible and worthy of two rotting thumbs up! Between the monsters in the mist and the monsters in the store, this film has proved to be just as exciting as we would expect from a big budget Stephen King blockbuster. And better still, the ending will knock that last breath right out of you! |
